Salisbury, MD - Two Green Araçari have been introduced to the Salisbury Zoo collection, marking the inaugural presence of this species at the facility. The specimens, identified as Natasha and Clint, have been acclimated to the renovated Rainforest habitat situated along the Tropics Trail, where they are cohabitating with Red-footed Tortoises. The pair was received from zoological institutions located in Texas and New Jersey.

The Green Araçari is classified as a small ramphastid, a relative of the toucan, indigenous to the lowland forests of northeastern South America, including the Amazon Basin, the Guianas, and the eastern Orinoco River drainage of Venezuela.

The species exhibits sexual dimorphism, facilitating visual identification based on physical characteristics; males display a black crown, whereas the female's crown is reddish-brown.

Management of the Green Araçari population in human care is conducted cooperatively to ensure long-term genetic viability. Collaboration is currently underway between the Salisbury Zoo and partner zoological entities to support the potential reproduction of the species.

Modifications to the Rainforest habitat were completed prior to the introduction of the new species. These renovations included masonry modifications, the installation of new shift doors, the renovation of indoor and outdoor pools, the construction of a secondary containment area, and the application of new paint throughout the enclosure. These improvements were undertaken to ensure the continued well-being of habitat inhabitants.

Zoo Director Chuck Eicholz indicated that these habitat renovations and species collaborations reflect long-term planning centered on animal welfare and the contribution to sustainable populations.

The new additions are currently available for public viewing in the Rainforest habitat along the Tropics Trail. The Salisbury Zoo operates daily beginning at 9 a.m. Contributions to support animal care and education programs may be submitted via the organization's website.
