Salisbury, MD - The Salisbury Zoo has announced significant improvements to several animal habitats as part of an initiative to enhance animal welfare and integrate sustainable practices. Construction and upgrades are scheduled over the coming weeks, with plans focusing on both behind-the-scenes areas and public-facing facilities.

Several habitats slated for upgrades were originally constructed during the 1970s and 1980s. These changes aim to modernize the spaces in line with current industry standards for animal care. Planned enhancements include the addition of energy-efficient HVAC and lighting systems to maintain precise temperatures and humidity levels.

These upgrades will replicate natural conditions for the animals. Additionally, animal-safe epoxy coatings will be applied to the floors and walls in holding areas, offering a more hygienic environment that is safer for the animals and easier for staff to maintain.

"These improvements will significantly impact the daily lives of our animals," said Chuck Eicholz, Director of the Salisbury Zoo. "They reflect our dedication to animal well-being while also advancing our mission of environmental sustainability."

The project also features the construction of a new Education facility. This space will serve as a home for the Zoo's wildlife ambassador animals, which participate in public programs and educational outreach. Energy-efficient systems and tailored environmental controls are being incorporated to create an optimal environment for both the animals and the Education Animal Care team.

The project also recognizes the essential contributions of the Zoo's docents, who play a critical role in community engagement and education.

These upgrades are an important step toward the Zoo's goal of securing Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation. The accreditation is widely regarded as the gold standard in zoological operations.

"AZA accreditation requires rigorous benchmarks for animal care, facility quality, and staff support," Eicholz added. "These projects bring us closer to achieving this standard."

To ensure animal safety during the construction period, temporary relocations have been arranged for several species:

  • Flamingos will move to the former alligator yard behind the Memorial Garden.
  • The anaconda will be housed in the old alligator building.
  • The spiny-tailed iguana will relocate to the habitat across from the flamingo yard.
  • The lynx will be cared for behind the scenes at The Benton Animal Hospital.

Visitor access will remain limited in areas impacted by construction. "We appreciate the community's patience and understanding as we make these improvements," Eicholz said. "Every step we take stems from our commitment to the animals, and we are confident these upgrades will have long-term benefits."

The Zoo emphasized that these projects are made possible by community support. "Every accomplishment, from habitat improvements to daily care and educational initiatives, is thanks to the generosity of our supporters," said Jamie Nichols, Development Supervisor. "Donations of any size directly contribute to the Zoo's growth and help maintain its mission for generations to come."
