Structure Fire in Delmar Believed To Be Caused by Disposal of Ground-Based Sparklers

Delmar, MD - A structure fire occurred in the 9000 block of Bi-State Boulevard in Delmar, Wicomico County, Maryland, on the night of July 4. The incident involved a one-story detached garage, leading to an estimated loss of $2,500 for the structure and $500 for its contents.
The Delmar Fire Department responded to the fire, with 20 firefighters arriving from assisting agencies, to address the situation. The blaze was brought under control within 20 minutes.
The fire was discovered by a neighbor, and initial investigations identified the exterior of the garage as the point of origin. The preliminary cause of the fire has been determined as accidental, attributed to discarded ground-based sparkling devices.
Authorities remind the public to exercise caution when handling such devices. It is recommended to ensure that these devices are fully cooled before disposal.
Submerging them in water or soaking them with a hose are suggested safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
