Sunday Morning Barn Fire Ruled Accidental Due To Combustibles Too Close To Heat Lamp
Wicomico County, MD - A structure fire was reported on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at approximately 2:34 AM in the 7900 block of Athol Road in Hebron, Wicomico County, Maryland. The incident involved a two-story, metal and wood-framed barn measuring 60 by 40 feet. The fire was initially discovered by a neighbor. The Mardela Springs Volunteer Fire Department was the primary responding agency. A total of 50 firefighters were dispatched to the single-alarm fire. The fire was brought under control within one hour. Estimated damages are $100,000 to the structure and $40,000 to its contents. A preliminary investigation determined the fire originated in the interior of the barn. The cause was ruled accidental. It was determined that combustibles were placed too close to a heat lamp that was being utilized to keep baby chicks warm.
