The Ocean City Police Department Honors the Life of Retired Corporal Raymond Land

Ocean City, MD - The Ocean City Police Department announces with profound sadness the passing of Retired Corporal Raymond Land, who served the Ocean City community with distinction from 1975 to 2010.
Cpl. Land was a dedicated officer whose contributions defined excellence in public service. Best remembered for his leadership in establishing and advancing the department's Mounted Unit, Cpl. Land, alongside his trusted mount, Mr. President, made a significant impact not only within the department but across the wider community.
Throughout his career, Cpl. Land demonstrated exceptional commitment. He was involved in over 2,000 arrests, with more than 500 carried out personally, including approximately 20 felony apprehensions. A career highlight came in 2002 when Cpl. Land successfully located and apprehended two robbery suspects within three hours of the crime.
As a Boardwalk Supervisor, Cpl. Land oversaw patrol operations, ensuring the safety of thousands of residents and visitors each summer. His courage and quick thinking were evident when he apprehended a suspected kidnapper while on duty.
Cpl. Land was also a dedicated advocate for his colleagues and community, serving as a 36-year member of the Fraternal Order of Police and an active participant in the National Police Athletic League. Beyond his professional duties, he freely gave his time to the Community Services Division, and his dedication to mentorship and service left an enduring legacy.
Chief Raymond Austin reflected on his contributions, stating, "Ray Land was more than a colleague; he was a pillar of this department for nearly four decades. Ray embodied the values of public service, dedication, and compassion. He demonstrated this time and again in his mentorship, not just to me, but to countless officers over the years. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, both within our department and throughout the Ocean City community."
Cpl. Land's personal pursuits mirrored his love of community and camaraderie. Off duty, he was an avid horseback rider and enjoyed participating in sports such as softball, football, and basketball. He also continued his professional development, earning a degree in Criminology from Western Maryland College and attending advanced training programs.
