Town of Berlin Initiates Search for Police Chief and Appoints Interim Leadership

WORCESTER COUNTY, MD - The Town of Berlin officially announced today that the recruitment process for a new Chief of Police has begun. This marks the start of a formal search to fill the department's highest leadership role. The town is looking for qualified candidates who can further the department's commitment to community-centered policing, public safety, and operational excellence.

In the wake of Chief Downing's retirement earlier this month, Lt. Robert Fisher has been appointed as the Interim Chief of Police. He will hold this position until a permanent Chief is selected. Interim Chief Fisher brings a wealth of experience to the role, including a strong background in operations, instruction, and community engagement. He is dedicated to maintaining community partnerships and upholding the department's core values of integrity, respect, and service.

Interim Chief Fisher has served over three decades in law enforcement, with 30 of those years spent at the Berlin Police Department. His diverse background includes roles as a collision reconstructionist, drone operator, and bicycle patrol unit member, along with previous service on the Town of Berlin SWAT team.

As a certified firearms instructor, he has also played a key role in the agency's administrative functions, assisting with budget management, hiring, and procurement. This blend of field experience and administrative leadership makes him well-suited to guide the department during this transition.
