Ocean City, MD - The Town of Ocean City Emergency Management is reminding residents to prepare for the start of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season. With the season officially commencing today, the Town is emphasizing the importance of preparedness and ensuring the safety of all community members.As the Atlantic hurricane season begins, it is crucial for Ocean City residents to be aware of their evacuation routes and gather necessary supplies. Director of Emergency Services, Joe Theobald, stresses the significance of preparedness, stating, "Take some time to learn what hazards could happen where you live, and then start preparing now for how to handle them. Your local or state emergency management agency can be a great resource to help you stay informed before, during, and after a disaster."To effectively prepare, the Town of Ocean City recommends the following actions:Know your Evacuation Route: Familiarize yourself with the evacuation routes in your area. Understand the designated paths to ensure a safe and efficient evacuation if necessary.Gather Supplies: Ensure you have enough food, water, and other essential supplies to sustain every member of your family for several days. Consider the unique needs of your family, including supplies for pets and medication for seniors. Additionally, it is advisable to include extra masks, soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, or general household cleaning supplies to protect against COVID-19 when evacuating to a shelter.Make an Emergency Plan: Develop a comprehensive hurricane plan that all members of your household understand. Remember to include plans for the office, daycare center, school, and any other frequented locations. Having a well-thought-out plan in place will help mitigate potential risks during an emergency.Remember the Furry Members of Your Family: Pets require their own emergency plans and supply kits. It is essential to identify shelters that accept pets in advance.
