Two Arrested Following Assault and Shooting in Chestertown
Chestertown, MD - On January 22, 2026, at approximately 2:30 p.m., members of the Chestertown Police Department responded to the 100 block of Elmer T Hawkins Drive. Officers were dispatched following reports of a fight in progress involving gunshots.
The subsequent investigation determined that a single victim was assaulted by multiple suspects. The victim was punched in the face and pistol-whipped inside a home before being dragged outside.
Once outside the residence, several shots were fired at the victim and two acquaintances as the suspects fled the scene.
The victim was transported to a local medical facility for treatment of injuries, which included lacerations and swelling. No other injuries were reported.
Further investigation revealed that two nearby homes were struck by gunfire during the incident. Evidence was recovered from each location.
Based on the victim's statement and identification, officers located and arrested two suspects at a residence in the 400 block of Calvert Street. A search warrant was executed at the location, and additional evidence was recovered.
A 17-year old juvenile of Chestertown, Maryland has been charged as an adult. He faces multiple charges, including three counts of Attempted Second Degree Murder, three counts of First Degree Assault, and various firearms offenses. He is currently held without bond at the Kent County Detention Center.
Mehki Terrence Jenkins, 19, of Kennedyville, Maryland was also arrested. He is charged with First Degree Assault, Second Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and firearms offenses. He is also being held without bond at the Kent County Detention Center.
During the incident, brief shelter-in-place notices were issued for HH Garnet Elementary School and Washington College.
The investigation is ongoing and is being led by Sergeant Chris Schwink. The Chestertown Police Department was assisted by multiple agencies, including the Kent County Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police, and local emergency services.
