State of Delaware - The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has announced that volunteer registration is now open for the 38th annual Delaware Coastal Cleanup. Scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13, the event will take place at more than 45 designated sites across the state from 9 a.m. to noon.
This annual initiative allows community members to assist in maintaining the state's beaches and waterways. Participants in the cleanup will help collect litter, debris, and recyclables from natural areas, directly contributing to DNREC's overarching mission of promoting high-quality outdoor recreation while safeguarding public health and the environment.
"Everyone who participates in the cleanup is playing a role in keeping Delaware's coastlines, beaches, and waterways clean," stated DNREC Secretary Greg Patterson. "We thank you in advance for making a difference today, and for setting an example for others to continue throughout the rest of the year and into the future."
Impact and Participation
The Delaware Coastal Cleanup has historically mobilized thousands of volunteers annually, demonstrating strong community engagement in environmental stewardship.
To encourage ongoing efforts beyond the cleanup event, DNREC has outlined several simple ways residents and visitors can contribute to keeping Delaware's natural spaces clean year-round:
- Pick Up Trash: Collect and properly dispose of litter near your residence to keep neighborhoods clean.
- Leave No Trace: Ensure all belongings and trash are taken with you after visiting outdoor areas, including Delaware State Parks and wildlife reserves.
- Be Prepared: Carry gloves and a disposable bag during activities like hiking or fishing to assist in the disposal of any encountered waste.
- Recycle: Familiarize yourself with Delaware's recycling guidelines and drop-off locations. Learn more at de.gov/recycling.

The event will be DNREC's largest cleanup effort of the year, and individuals or groups interested in participating can register at de.gov/coastalcleanup. Additional details about the history and significance of the cleanup initiative are also available on the website.
