Wicomico County Crash Under Investigation After Vehicle Ends Up In Pond
Wicomico County, MD - The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation into a single-vehicle crash initially reported on Eastern Shore Undercover that resulted in one person losing their life and two more injured on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred around 8:41 p.m. at the intersection of South Division Street and Coulbourn Mill Road in Wicomico County, Maryland.
According to the preliminary investigation, a Honda Civic operated by 18-year-old Matthew Garcia of Rockville, Maryland, was traveling on South Division Street.
Investigators indicate the vehicle failed to stop at a posted stop sign before entering the intersection.
Garcia attempted to steer through the turn but struck a guardrail, causing the vehicle to come to rest in the Coulbourn Mill Pond. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.
Garcia was flown by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a trauma center, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Two passengers were also in the vehicle: 18-year-old Andy Fon Koh of Takoma Park, Maryland, and 18-year-old Eyuael Zewdie of Washington, D.C. Koh was flown to a shock trauma center for treatment, while Zewdie was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
Officers from the Fruitland Police Department initially responded to the scene. Assistance was provided by troopers from the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack.
The roadway remained closed for more than four hours while the investigation took place. At the request of the Fruitland Police Department, the Maryland State Police Crash Team is continuing the active investigation.
