Wicomico County, MD - Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano and members of her administration have been invited to Washington, D.C. The invitation was issued by the office of Jim Jordan, Chairman of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. The county officials will attend a congressional markup hearing on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

This invitation follows Giordano's formal testimony before the Maryland General Assembly. She testified in opposition to Maryland Senate Bill 245 and Maryland House Bill 444. These bills restrict local participation in specific federal immigration enforcement agreements.

Giordano has advocated for local government authority to cooperate with federal partners on public safety initiatives. This includes participation in federal immigration enforcement programs. Her testimony focused on local control, public safety, and the operational requirements of county law enforcement agencies.

"It is an honor to be invited to Washington to observe this important federal discussion," said County Executive Giordano. "Wicomico County has taken a clear position that public safety decisions should be guided by local data, local accountability, and the needs of our residents - not political pressure from Annapolis. I appreciate Chairman Jordan and his team for recognizing the importance of the local government perspective in this national conversation."

The markup hearing on March 5 will focus on federal immigration enforcement policy matters. These matters are currently under consideration by the House Judiciary Committee. The hearing addresses Maryland's recent legislation and the debate over local government involvement in federal immigration cooperation.

The Wicomico County administration maintains that its participation in federal partnerships is lawful. It focuses on individuals already within the correctional system. County officials have stated that statewide prohibitions limit local flexibility in managing public safety.

Giordano and her team will attend the hearing and advocate for policies prioritizing community safety and local government authority.
