Wicomico County Public Schools Implements Weapons Detection Screening for Winter Sports Season
WICOMICO COUNTY, MD - Wicomico County Public Schools has announced safety protocols for the upcoming 2025-2026 Winter Sports season. The district remains committed to maintaining a secure environment for all students, staff, and spectators attending indoor athletic events.
As part of this effort, weapons detection systems will be deployed randomly throughout the season at James M. Bennett, Mardela, Parkside, and Wicomico High School.
Attendees are advised that while detection units will not be present at every game, preparation for potential screening is recommended for all events.
During screening procedures, individuals will be required to empty all pockets of items such as phones, keys, and watches. Large bags, including backpacks, are prohibited from entry, while purses and diaper bags will be subject to search.
The district has reiterated that weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on school property. Additionally, the ban on tobacco products, including vapes, remains in effect.
These measures are intended to facilitate efficient entry and ensure safety for the school community. Cooperation and patience from the public are requested to support student-athletes and staff throughout the winter season.
