WICOMICO COUNTY'S MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY SET FOR MONDAY, MAY 26

Wicomico County, MD - Each year, the residents of Wicomico County come together to remember and honor the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice. This year, the county's Memorial Day Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. It will take place at the Wicomico War Veterans' Memorial, located in front of the Wicomico Civic Center.
This event provides a meaningful opportunity for community members to pay their respects and show appreciation for the brave individuals who served and lost their lives in the line of duty. Everyone is welcome to attend, and the ceremony is organized by the dedicated members of the Wicomico County War Memorial Committee.
The ceremony will feature several poignant tributes and traditions. Attendees will witness the lowering of the colors by the Wicomico County JROTC and hear the somber tones of the Red Knights Memorial Bell.
Additionally, branch prayers will be offered, followed by a solemn volley of arms conducted by the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office.
A particularly significant part of the ceremony is the tribute to Gold Star Mothers, alongside a collective acknowledgment of veterans and their families. Committee members will perform the Reading of Veterans' Names to ensure that each fallen hero from Wicomico County is remembered.
In case of inclement weather, the event will move indoors to the Midway Room at the Wicomico Civic Center, ensuring that the ceremony continues regardless of conditions.
The Wicomico War Veterans' Memorial stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by servicemen and women from Wicomico County. Established in 2002 by a group of local veterans from various military branches, the memorial serves as a permanent tribute to the county's war heroes.
Flags representing different branches of the armed forces, as well as the American, Maryland, Wicomico County, and POW-MIA flags, fly above a wall bearing the names of servicemen and women from the county who were killed in action since World War I.
The War Memorial Committee is dedicated to preserving the history and stories of these individuals. They are actively seeking information from the public and encourage anyone with relevant details to contact Tricia Collins via email at tcollins@wicomicocounty.org or by phone at 410-548-4900.
A meaningful way to contribute to the memorial's upkeep and honor a loved one is through the purchase of a Tree of Honor Gold Leaf. These engraved leaves, which feature the name and a personal message, are displayed on the Veterans' Tree of Honor in the Civic Center lobby. Each gold leaf is priced at $100, with proceeds going toward the perpetual maintenance of the memorial.
