Wilmington Man Arrested After High-Speed Chase Endangers Pedestrians in Dewey Beach

DEWEY BEACH, DE - Dewey Beach Police arrested a 29-year-old Wilmington man following a dangerous vehicle pursuit that put multiple people at risk on August 29, 2025.


Officers initiated the incident at approximately 9:35 p.m. near New Orleans Street and Coastal Highway in Dewey Beach, Delaware. A motorcycle unit officer observed a black Acura SUV traveling southbound, passing stopped vehicles and failing to stop at a stop sign.


The driver, later identified as Louis J. Fedele, refused to comply when officers attempted a traffic stop. He fled at high speed through the town.


During the pursuit, Fedele drove on the shoulder of Coastal Highway at speeds between 60-70 mph in a 25 mph zone.


The situation escalated at the intersection of Coastal Highway and Dickinson Avenue. Fedele disregarded a red traffic signal and nearly struck three pedestrians who were crossing the roadway legally. The pedestrians jumped out of the vehicle's path to avoid injury.


The chase continued southbound with Fedele reaching speeds over 100 mph. Officers conducted a felony stop near the Indian River Inlet Bridge and took the suspect into custody without further incident.


During questioning, he admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages before driving. He told officers he fled police to avoid arrest for driving under the influence.


Police executed a blood search warrant. Toxicology results are pending. Fedele faces multiple charges including:


  • Three counts of Reckless Endangerment First Degree (Creating a Substantial Risk of Death to Another)
  • Disregarding a Police Officer Signal
  • Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol
  • Aggressive Driving
  • Numerous related traffic violations


He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution with bail set at $4,306.
