Winter Storm Warning Issued for Worcester County
Worcester County, MD - The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Worcester County. Current forecasts predict approximately six inches of mixed snow and ice, accompanied by prolonged and dangerously low temperatures.
The Worcester County Department of Emergency Services (DES) is urging residents to prepare immediately, as these conditions are likely to cause power outages, downed trees, and rapidly deteriorating road conditions. Low visibility is also expected during the storm.
"We ask everyone to avoid unnecessary travel once the precipitation begins and to keep roadways clear for snowplows and emergency vehicles," DES Director Chris Shaffer said. "If you must travel, exercise extreme caution, and bring car chargers, sand or kitty litter for tire traction, warm clothing, food, and water. Be sure to notify family and friends of your travel routes and an expected arrival time."
Residents are reminded that life-threatening conditions can develop quickly in extreme cold. To stay safe, the department recommends keeping phones charged to receive weather updates and stocking at least three days' worth of non-perishable food, water, and medications.
It is also important to move parked vehicles and obstructions off roadways to assist clearing efforts. Residents should check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors and ensure they know who to contact in case of a power outage.
Animal safety and home maintenance are also priorities during this weather event. Pets should be brought indoors and provided with unfrozen water. To protect plumbing, a thin stream of cold water should run from faucets during subfreezing temperatures.
Portable heating sources must only be used according to manufacturer directions, with combustible materials kept at least three feet away. Generators should never be operated indoors or in attached garages.
