Worcester County, MD - Worcester County officials are urging residents to prepare for a significant coastal storm expected to impact the area this weekend. The Worcester County Department of Emergency Services is working with the National Weather Service to monitor the developing weather system.

The storm is anticipated to begin affecting the region late Saturday afternoon. Officials expect the most severe conditions to occur from late Saturday through early Monday morning.

Forecasters predict the nor'easter will bring heavy rainfall and strong winds with gusts exceeding 55 mph. The storm will also generate high surf conditions and coastal flooding. King tides will worsen the flooding situation in vulnerable areas.

Emergency services officials are particularly concerned about residents in mobile homes and flood-prone locations. These individuals are strongly advised to arrange alternative accommodations with friends or relatives before the storm arrives.

The Department of Emergency Services has issued specific preparation guidelines for all residents. Officials recommend securing outdoor objects such as lawn furniture and trash cans that could become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Boat owners should ensure their vessels are properly tied down.

Residents should also assemble emergency kits containing essential supplies. These kits should include prescription medications, protective equipment, clothing, food, water, and other family necessities.

"It's important for residents and visitors to prepare before a storm," DES Director Chris Shaffer said. "Know your property's flood risk, identify your evacuation route, and gather supplies that can support your family for several days if needed."

The county provides additional resources through its website at www.co.worcester.md.us. Residents can access the Worcester County Evacuation Zone Map by clicking on "Know Your Zone" under Important Links. The Family Emergency Preparedness Guide, available under Emergency Services, offers detailed instructions for assembling emergency kits.

County officials emphasize the importance of advance preparation as the storm approaches. Residents are encouraged to complete their storm preparations before conditions deteriorate Saturday afternoon.
