All 50 States Send Crabs to Crisfield's Big Derby

Crisfield, MD - This Labor Day Weekend, Crisfield will host something it has never done before. All 50 states will send a specially named crab to compete in the Governor's Cup Crab Race.

The race is part of the 79th Annual National Hard Crab Derby, running September 3 through 6 in Crisfield.

The Governor's Cup Crab Race itself takes place Saturday, September 5, at 2:30 p.m.

Maryland's crab is named "No More Mr. Nice Claw." It will race against crabs representing every other state, each with its own themed name tied to that state's culture or history.

The event lines up with America's 250th anniversary. Organizers say the winning state will get to claim the title of having the fastest crab in the country for the rest of the year.

Derby Chair LeeAnn Linton talked about what the race means for communities across the country. "This is a lighthearted competition that brings together every corner of the country while celebrating one of Maryland's most beloved traditions," she said. "Whether you're traveling from Maryland or another state, everyone can cheer for their state's crab as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary together."

The Hard Crab Derby has been a Labor Day tradition since 1947. It has grown into one of the longest running festivals in Maryland, featuring crab races, crab picking contests, boat docking competitions, a parade, live music, carnival rides, and local seafood.

This year the festival is adding new exhibits about its own history. Visitors will also be able to see the world's largest inflatable National Hard Crab Derby crab.

The overall winner of the crab race gets pardoned by Chief Lee and released back into the Chesapeake Bay. Organizers are encouraging residents, businesses, schools, and civic groups to show up and cheer for their home state.

Organizers also suggest wearing state colors on race day to show some hometown pride.
