Autism Support Backpacks Donated to Wicomico Sheriff's Office

Salisbury, MD - The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office has received 30 Autism Support Backpacks from the Hussman Institute for Autism. The donation gives deputies more tools to help individuals with autism during emergency and community interactions.

The backpacks were made specifically for first responders. They are meant to help reduce communication barriers and sensory challenges that can come up during stressful situations.

Each kit includes communication boards and visual supports. They also include sensory items that can help bring comfort and promote calm during an interaction.

"These backpacks provide our deputies with another tool to better serve the individuals and families in our community," said Sheriff Michael A. Lewis. "We are grateful to the Hussman Institute for Autism for their generosity and for their commitment to helping first responders better understand and support individuals with autism."

The backpacks will be available to Wicomico County Sheriff's Office personnel for calls for service and other situations where someone with autism may benefit from the resources.

The Hussman Institute for Autism builds resources and training to help first responders communicate and interact more effectively with individuals on the autism spectrum. Their first-responder kits are designed to give practical communication and sensory supports during stressful situations.
