Cambridge Man Caught on Camera Shoplifting from Wawa in the Early Morning Hours
Cambridge, MD - Cambridge police were called to a local Wawa in the middle of the night after an employee reported a shoplifting in progress. The incident happened at approximately 1:59 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2026, at the Wawa located at 601 Sunburst Highway in Cambridge.
Officers arrived and were given a description of the suspect, who had already left the store on foot by the time they got there. Police began searching the surrounding area looking for anyone matching that description.
It did not take long for officers to locate a person of interest. A subject matching the suspect's description was found near the intersection of Cedar Street and Dorchester Avenue. Officers made contact with the individual, who was identified as Deonta Dontrell McKnight, 18 years old, from Cambridge, Maryland.
While some officers were in the field with McKnight, others responded to the Wawa to review the store's security footage. The video told a clear story. Investigators watched as McKnight left the store without paying for items he had taken.
McKnight was also found to still be in possession of multiple food items when officers made contact with him. The stolen merchandise fell under the threshold for a felony theft charge.
As a result of the investigation, McKnight was issued a Criminal Citation and released. He now faces one charge of Theft Less Than $100.00.
This is a reminder that even in the late-night and early morning hours, businesses in our community have working surveillance systems and staff who are paying attention. Cambridge Police responded quickly and were able to identify and locate the suspect in a short period of time.
