Commercial Garage Fire at Wye Mills Recycling Center Burns Through the Night
Talbot County, MD - A three alarm fire broke out Saturday evening at a commercial recycling center in Wye Mills, sending more than 100 firefighters to the scene and leaving crews unable to fully contain the blaze.
The fire was reported around 6:04 p.m. on May 2, 2026, at Dependable SSR LLC, located in the 13100 block of Ocean Gateway in Talbot County, Maryland. The business operates as a privately owned recycling center that processes stone, concrete, and wood materials.
A passerby spotted the fire and reported it. When fire crews arrived, they found a two story commercial garage fully involved, along with large surrounding piles of mulch chips and lumber that had also caught fire.
The Cordova Volunteer Fire Department led the response. Units from numerous other departments joined in, bringing the total to 120 firefighters working across three alarms.
Despite their efforts, crews could not get the fire under control. The massive amount of combustible materials on the property made it extremely difficult to extinguish.
As of the time of this report, the fire continues to burn.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Forest Service is now monitoring the situation. Officials believe the fire could burn for an extended period of time given the volume of materials involved.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. The area of origin is also under investigation at this time.
