State of DE - On August 13, 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Delaware State Police responded to the unit block of Slaughter Station Road in Hartly, Delaware, for a report of a shooting.

Troopers learned that an unknown suspect had fired several shots that struck an occupied home. No one was hurt from the gunfire.

While troopers and detectives were still at the scene, more gunfire rang out. The rounds hit tree branches overhead. Investigators traced the gunfire to a home on Judy's Truck Drive in Hartley, Delaware.

When troopers got to that address, they saw a man walking out of a detached garage with what looked like a gun. He was taken into custody without any trouble. Police identified him as 24-year-old Dakota Carey, of Hartly, DE.

Carey was charged with two counts of discharging a firearm at a dwelling, three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and seven counts of reckless endangering in the first degree. He also faces two counts of possession of a firearm while under the influence and two counts of criminal mischief under $1,000.

Carey was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace. He posted a $26,500 secured bond and was released.
