Democratic Senators Push Back on Trump's Canada Tariffs

State of DE - Five U.S. senators released a joint statement this week speaking out against President Trump's tariffs on Canada. The senators are Chris Coons of Delaware, Patty Murray of Washington, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, and Elissa Slotkin of Michigan.

In the statement, the senators said their states depend on Canada as a key trading partner. "The states we represent rely on Canada as a key trading partner and our primary export market," they said. "We have deep ties with our neighbors to the north, and we share one of the world's most enduring defense partnerships."

The senators pointed to the long history between the two countries. "We have built two powerful nations over many decades by working together, growing our economies together, and securing our homelands together," they said. "Our countries have achieved great things by working closely together, and we still can."

The group said the tariffs will hurt small businesses, farmers, and working families in their states. "His tariffs will squeeze our states' small businesses and farmers harder and drive costs up for working families," the senators said. They pointed to higher costs for lumber, plywood, and construction equipment needed to build new housing.

The senators also said workers in the auto, aircraft, and machinery industries would be affected. "They will hurt our workers and businesses who manufacture autos, aircraft, and machinery," they said. They added that the tariffs will raise prices on everyday items like milk, clothing, and paper products.

The statement claims Trump's tariffs have already cost American families thousands of dollars. "President Trump's tariffs have already cost American families as much as $5,000 in some states, and his senseless trade war with Canada will only grow that number," the senators said. They said Canada and other countries are now looking to trade more with nations like China instead of the United States.

The senators closed by calling on fellow lawmakers to take action. "Congressional Republicans need to stand up to the president and do their part to give families and businesses on both sides of the border relief from this insanity," they said. The senators did not say whether any legislative action is currently planned.
