State of VA - A Carroll County deputy is dead and another is recovering after a man opened fire on them during a welfare check late Friday night.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office received a call at approximately 9:26 p.m. from a family member requesting a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway in Carroll County, Virginia.

When deputies arrived and made contact with the male subject, identified as Michael Puckett, he opened fire on them. Both deputies were struck by gunfire.

One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical treatment. He is reported to be in stable condition.

Puckett fled the scene after the shooting and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway to locate him.

Authorities say Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or knows his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to call 911 immediately.
