Salisbury, MD - Young ball players in eastern Wicomico County will soon have better fields to play on. The state has approved another $247,500 to fix up the East Wicomico Little League facilities.

The Maryland Board of Public Works approved the money at its meeting on October 7, 2026.

The funds come from Maryland's Program Open Space Local Share program, a state program that helps pay for local parks and recreation projects.

The money will go toward several upgrades at the league's facilities. Plans call for new fencing and other facility upgrades, along with work on the restrooms and the concession stand.

The ballfields will also see improvements. The project includes new signs and landscaping work as well.

The county says the upgrades are meant to make the facilities better for young athletes, their families, and the wider community.

"This is another great investment in our community and, most importantly, in our children," said County Executive Julie Giordano.

"Youth sports play an important role in bringing families together, teaching teamwork, and giving our children opportunities to grow and succeed. These improvements will help ensure that East Wicomico Little League continues to be a place where our young athletes can play, compete, and create lasting memories," Giordano said.

County officials say the funding is part of an ongoing effort to improve local recreation spots. They also point to it as an example of bringing in outside money for projects that help residents.

"Throughout my administration, we have made it a priority to pursue state and federal funding opportunities that allow us to invest in our community while being responsible with local taxpayer dollars," Giordano added. "Whether it's our parks, recreational facilities, schools, or infrastructure, these investments are about improving the quality of life for the people who call Wicomico County home."
