We normally don't make it a habit of getting involved in Board of Education election races but this year, one candidate stands out above the rest, and we want to put our full support behind this individual.

In the race for Wicomico County Board of Education, District 4, Mrs. Susan Beauchamp is running against Mr. Seth Roberts. School board races are non-partisan, so there is no need to talk about Republican or Democrat. It is about who is best for our children, the parents and staff at schools.

Let's start with Mr. Seth Roberts. I try to give every candidate the benefit of the doubt, and I do my own research on each one.

I could not find a campaign website or a social media page for Mr. Roberts. I also could not find any public information about his beliefs or his positions on the issues that affect our schools. That made it very hard for me to give a fair statement about him.

It wasn't that we didn't want to share info on him, we simply could not find any.

That was not the case with Mrs. Susan Beauchamp. She has a campaign website at www.susanbeauchampforschoolboard.com and a Facebook page for her school board run at www.facebook.com/susanforboardofed.

Both made it easy for me to learn where she stands on the topics that affect our children. Here is what stood out to me.

Mrs. Beauchamp believes in getting back to the basics of education. That means reading, writing, math, social studies, history, grammar, and handwriting.

She also wants financial literacy to be a graduation requirement. We did not have that when I graduated high school. I think it is very important for our children to learn about money, because it will help them for the rest of their lives.

She believes students should learn without any political influence in our schools. This is a big positive for me. I don't think children should be pushed one way or another by teachers or school leaders.

I don't even think parents and guardians should make that choice for their children. So I certainly don't think our school system should.

Mrs. Beauchamp also cares about spending public money wisely. She believes the public should know where school money is going and what it is being used for, with checks and balances in place.

The last point I want to share is her focus on better communication between parents, teachers, and students. Her website says she stands for improved communication that is clear and timely.

I think we can all agree that this is lacking in our public schools. Having Mrs. Beauchamp on the school board will help get more information from the schools to the parents.

I would have liked to tell you more about Mr. Roberts, both good and bad. I just could not find any public information about him. I can't support a candidate when I don't know where he stands, and I think many voters will feel the same way.

It is also hard to vote against someone like Mrs. Susan Beauchamp. If you have met her, you know she is one of the kindest people you will ever meet.

Every time we have run into her at an event or around town, she greets people with a warm smile and a kind heart. That is the kind of person we need to make decisions for our children on the Board of Education.

I could go on and on about her, but I think you get the point. Mrs. Susan Beauchamp is good for Wicomico County, good for the Board of Education, and good for the parents, children, and staff in our schools.

These are just some of the reasons we proudly endorse Mrs. Susan Beauchamp for Wicomico County Board of Education, District 4.
