Caroline County, MD - A Federalsburg man was arrested last week after deputies say he stole merchandise from a local tobacco shop while the store owner tried to stop him from leaving.

On May 7, 2026, at approximately 9:17 a.m., the Caroline County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to Tobacco & Smoke Shop at 3352 Hayman Drive in Federalsburg for a reported robbery in progress.

When deputies arrived, they learned a robbery had not taken place. However, they found that a suspect had stolen merchandise from inside the store.

According to deputies, the store owner reported that an unknown white male entered the shop shortly after it opened. The man made his way behind the counter and began taking merchandise.

The store owner attempted to stop the man from leaving with the stolen items. No weapons were displayed during the incident, and no injuries were reported.

The unknown male left the store with merchandise valued at approximately $450.00.

Deputies conducted an investigation and were able to identify the suspect along with the vehicle he was driving at the time of the incident.

As a result of that investigation, deputies arrested Luke Stoltzmann, 32, of Federalsburg. He was charged with theft less than $1,000.00.

Stoltzmann was processed and taken before a District Court Commissioner. He was released on a $1,000 unsecured bond.
