Four Salisbury Schools in Secure Status as a Precaution
Salisbury, MD - Four schools in Salisbury have been placed in a "Secure" status as a safety step, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office says there is no sign of an active threat to any of the schools.
The schools are Wicomico High School, Wicomico Middle School, East Salisbury Elementary School, and Choices. Each one is following the Standard Response Protocol K-12, a plan schools use to respond to safety concerns.
The schools were placed in this status because of an incident that happened in the City of Salisbury. The Sheriff's Office says the incident is not directly related to the schools and is not taking place within Wicomico County Public Schools. No details about the incident have been released at this time.
When a school is in a "Secure" status, all students and staff are brought inside the building.
Every outside door and entry point is locked, and no outdoor activities are allowed.
Inside the schools, the day goes on as usual. Classes continue without interruption.
The Sheriff's Office says these steps are being taken "out of an abundance of caution." Deputies are working with school officials and other law enforcement agencies to keep an eye on the situation.
The public is asked to stay away from the affected area so first responders can do their work. The Sheriff's Office thanked the community for its cooperation.
"The safety of our students, staff, and community remains our highest priority," the Sheriff's Office said.
