Georgetown, DE - On October 4, 2026, at approximately 10:25 p.m., the Delaware State Police conducted a traffic stop on Route 1 southbound near Wrangle Hill Road, Bear, DE. That stop ended with a Georgetown man facing a felony DUI charge.

Police say a trooper noticed a Nissan Titan swerving as it traveled south on Route 1. The trooper pulled the truck over and spoke with the driver.

The driver was identified as 65-year-old Bruce Butler of Georgetown, DE. Police say Butler showed signs that he was impaired.

The trooper asked Butler to take the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. These are simple tests officers use to help check whether a driver may be impaired.

Police say Butler refused to complete all of the tests. He was then arrested for driving under the influence.

A computer check turned up more information about his driving record. Police say Butler had four prior DUI-related convictions.

The same check showed that his driver's license was suspended or revoked. That means he was not legally allowed to be driving at the time of the stop.

Butler was taken to Delaware State Police Troop 2. There, he was charged and then arraigned by the Justice of the Peace.

He faces three charges in this case. They are 5th Offense DUI, which is a felony, Driving while Suspended or Revoked, and Failure to Remain within a Single Lane.

Butler was committed to the Department of Correction on a $6,150 secured bond. A secured bond means money or property must be posted before a person can be released.
