ICE Arrests Man Convicted in Fatal Gambrills Crash Again

State of MD - Immigration and Customs Enforcement made another arrest this week in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The agency says it took Martin Martinez-Ballinas into custody as part of an effort targeting what ICE calls "the worst of the worst" among criminal illegal aliens.

Martinez-Ballinas, 38, is a citizen of Mexico who has now been deported twice before.

This is not his first run in with the law here. Martinez-Ballinas was convicted of negligent homicide and two counts of illegal re-entry stemming from a deadly crash years ago in Gambrills, Maryland.

Back in February 2017, Martinez-Ballinas crashed into a motorcycle ridden by United States Marine, James Walden. Walden was 21 years old and stationed at Ft. Meade at the time of the crash. He did not survive the crash.

Martinez-Ballinas left the scene after the fatal crash and was later arrested by the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

A judge handed down a six-year prison sentence. Martinez-Ballinas did not serve all of it. He was deported to Mexico in 2020, before finishing even half of his sentence.

That only led to him coming back to the United States. A year later, he was caught again, this time at the southern border in Texas.

That arrest led to a 15-month prison sentence. Once he served that time, he was deported a second time in October 2022.

Martinez-Ballinas returned to the country yet again. He was arrested once more in December 2023.

This latest ICE arrest marks his third time being taken into custody after re-entering the country illegally. Each time, he has come back despite being caught, convicted, and sent back to Mexico.

The case has drawn attention as ICE continues to focus on criminal illegal aliens with serious convictions. Martinez-Ballinas's history includes a fatal crash, two prior deportations, and multiple criminal charges tied to his repeated re-entries.
