John Deere Skid Steer Goes Up in Flames at Eden Property
Wicomico County, MD - A piece of heavy equipment worth $70,000 was destroyed by fire Friday night at a Wicomico County property, and investigators are still working to determine what caused it.
The fire broke out around 9:00 PM on May 8, 2026, in the 4100 block of Stockyard Road in Eden, Maryland. The machine involved was a 2022 John Deere 325G skid steer, a piece of construction and agricultural equipment commonly used for moving materials and digging.
A neighbor spotted the fire and called it in. When firefighters arrived, flames were coming from the engine compartment of the skid steer.
Sixteen firefighters from the Fruitland Volunteer Fire Company and assisting agencies responded to the scene under a single alarm. The crew got the fire under control in just two minutes.
The skid steer was a total loss, with damages estimated at $70,000. No content losses were reported.
A white 2016 Dodge 2500 pickup truck that was parked beside the skid steer also sustained minor heat damage as a result of the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Fire officials have identified the engine compartment as the area where the fire originated, but no official cause has been determined at this time.
It is not uncommon for fires to start in engine compartments of heavy equipment. Heat, fuel lines, and electrical components are often close together, which can create conditions where a fire can start and spread quickly.
Anyone with information about this fire is encouraged to contact local authorities.
