K9 Blitz to Get New Body Armor Thanks to Nonprofit Donation
Laurel, DE - Laurel Police Department has some good news to share about one of its four-legged officers. K9 Blitz will soon be outfitted with a bullet and stab protective vest, thanks to a generous donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.
The nonprofit is sponsoring Blitz's new vest, which will include a special embroidered message: "In memory of Don Fike." The department expects delivery within about ten weeks.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has been protecting K9 officers since 2009. The 501(c)(3) charity provides bullet and stab protective vests, along with other support, to law enforcement K9s across the country.
These vests aren't just any gear. They're made in the U.S., custom fitted for each dog, and certified by the National Institute of Justice. That means Blitz will be getting equipment built specifically to keep him safe on the job.
Since the organization started, it has provided more than 6,603 vests to K9s in all 50 states. That's a total value of $6.9 million, made possible through private and corporate donations.
To qualify for the program, a K9 must be at least 20 months old, actively working, and certified with a law enforcement or related agency. Dogs with expired vests can also apply for a replacement. With an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s serving across the country, the need for this kind of support is significant.
Each vest costs $1,800, but a donation of just $1,050 can sponsor one for a K9 in need. The vests weigh around 4 to 5 pounds and come with a five-year warranty, so the protection lasts.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts donations of any amount. Those interested in giving or learning about volunteer opportunities can call (508) 824-6978. More information is also available at www.vik9s.org, or by mail at P.O. Box 9, East Taunton, MA 02718.
Congratulations to K9 Blitz and the Laurel Police Department on this donation. It's a great reminder of how much community support means for the K9 officers who help keep our neighborhoods safe.
