Laurel Traffic Stop Leads to Drugs, Gun and Cash Bust
Laurel, DE - A routine traffic stop in Laurel, Delaware, turned into a major drug and weapons arrest last week. Officers from the Laurel Police Department pulled over a vehicle on June 19, 2026 as part of a suspected DUI investigation. The stop happened around 11:44 p.m.
While talking to the driver, officers tried to identify a passenger in the car. That passenger refused to give his name at first. Police were finally able to identify him as 35-year-old Joe Smith of Laurel, Delaware.
A records check showed Smith had two active capias warrants. Officers let him know about the warrants and moved to take him into custody. At that time, Smith took off running and led officers on a short foot pursuit.
A short time later, he was taken into custody.
A search of Smith and the vehicle turned up a significant amount of suspected heroin. Officers found about 10.5 grams split into 455 individual baggies, often a sign of street-level distribution. They also recovered a loaded, privately made 9mm handgun, sometimes called a "ghost gun."
The search didn't stop there. Officers also seized about 0.8 ounces of marijuana and $6,260 in cash. All of it was taken as evidence.
Smith was arrested and transported for processing. He now faces several charges, including resisting arrest and fleeing to avoid apprehension. He's also charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On top of that, Smith faces firearms-related offenses tied to the ghost gun. He's also dealing with additional charges connected to his two outstanding capias warrants.
Smith appeared before the Justice of the Peace Court for arraignment. His bail was set at $214,300 cash, and he was unable to post it. He was then transported to Sussex Correctional Institution to await further proceedings.
