Millsboro Bypass to Be Renamed for Senator Cordrey

State of DE - Governor Matt Meyer will sign Senate Bill 349 this week. The bill officially renames the North Millsboro Bypass in honor of the late Senator Richard S. Cordrey.

Senator Brian Pettyjohn sponsored the legislation. It recognizes Cordrey, a Millsboro native who spent much of his life in public service to Delaware.

Cordrey served in the Delaware General Assembly from 1970 to 1996. That is a span of 26 years representing his community at the state level.
After leaving the General Assembly, Cordrey went on to serve as Delaware's Secretary of Finance. His career reflected decades of steady involvement in state government.

Following the bill signing, Governor Meyer will be joined by Senator Pettyjohn and members of the Cordrey family. Together they will unveil the new sign for the Senator Richard S. Cordrey Bypass.

Secretary of Transportation Shante Hastings and Representative Valerie Jones Giltner are also expected to take part. Their attendance reflects the significance of the honor within the state government.

The bill signing and sign unveiling are scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The event will run from 2:00 to 2:30 PM.

It will take place at the cul-de-sac near 24514 Betts Pond Road in Millsboro, Delaware. The location sits along the bypass that will now carry Cordrey's name.

The renaming stands as a lasting tribute to a longtime Delaware public servant. It gives Millsboro a permanent reminder of Cordrey's contributions to the state he called home.
