MSP Aviation Team Trains for Animal Rescues in Disasters

State of MD - The Maryland State Police Aviation Command took part in a training exercise focused on rescuing animals during disasters. The training centered on the challenges of safely rescuing and transporting animals during emergency operations.

The joint exercise was held on September 9, 2026 at Aberdeen Proving Ground. It brought together the Maryland Helicopter Aquatic Response Team, known as HART.

HART is made up of the Maryland State Police, the Maryland Army National Guard, Maryland Task Force 1, and Harford County Animal Control. Each agency took part in the hands-on training.

Crews practiced ground-based instruction along with hoist operations involving K-9s. Aviation crews and ground personnel learned how to safely handle animals in stressful environments around helicopters.

These exercises are meant to strengthen Maryland's ability to respond when disaster strikes. During major disasters, specialized teams may be called on to rescue or evacuate people and animals from areas that ground crews cannot reach.

Joint training among partner agencies helps improve coordination when resources are needed most. Working together ahead of time can make emergency responses faster and safer.

Over the past few years, MSPAC has worked to expand its role in K-9 operations across Maryland. Crews have trained with local and regional partners on deployments and hoist operations involving K-9 teams.

MSPAC crews have also been outfitted with specialized equipment to help injured K-9s during emergency transport. This gives crews the tools they need to move injured animals safely when time matters most.

Continued training among these agencies helps make sure personnel are ready to work together when it counts. The goal is to protect lives, help communities, and rescue animals that become stranded when disaster hits.
