MSP Trooper 5 Rescues Injured Mountain Biker From Rocky Gap Trail

State of MD - A mountain biker got a dramatic rescue from the sky after suffering a seizure on a remote trail at Rocky Gap State Park.

The incident happened Sunday morning at around 11:09 a.m. The Allegany County rescue crews were called to a remote section of trail in the park after a biker had a seizure and fell.

Because of the biker's remote location and the extent of the injuries, crews knew a standard extraction would take too long. That's when they called in the Maryland State Police Aviation Command for an aerial hoist rescue.

Trooper 5, the State Police helicopter based in Cumberland, answered the call. While the helicopter made its way to the scene, local EMS and rescue teams stayed with the victim on the ground, keeping them stable and preparing them for transport.

Once Trooper 5 arrived overhead, a Trooper/Rescue Technician was lowered into a small clearing in the trees near the injured biker. The victim was secured in an aerial rescue vest, getting them ready for the lift out.

From there, the pilots carefully hovered above the wooded area and hoisted the victim safely into the aircraft. The flight crew wasted no time, shifting straight into medevac mode and flying the patient to a local hospital for treatment.

The rescue was carried out using an AgustaWestland AW-139 helicopter, part of the Maryland State Police Aviation Command's fleet.

The MSPAC has been serving Maryland since 1970. Today, the agency runs 10 AW139 helicopters out of seven bases across the state, providing round-the-clock coverage for residents and visitors alike.

Beyond medevac flights, the MSPAC handles law enforcement support, search and rescue, homeland security, and disaster assessment missions. As Sunday's rescue shows, these missions often depend on strong teamwork between local fire, rescue, EMS, and law enforcement agencies working alongside the state's aviation crews.
