Racetrack Road and Route 50 Lane Closures Start Monday

Worcester County, MD - Drivers who use Racetrack Road near Route 50 should plan for some slowdowns starting next week. Lane closures begin Monday, September 28, as crews start widening the road where MD 589 (Racetrack Road) meets US 50 (Ocean Gateway).

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) announced the work on September 23, 2026. The roadwork is part of the Coastal Square commercial development.

This part of the project is expected to take about three weeks, weather permitting. The closures will be single lane closures that happen off and on while crews are working.

The work is being done by Reynolds Excavating of Princess Anne, the contractor hired by the developer. Crews will be on site from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Flaggers will be on hand to guide drivers safely through the work zone. Drivers will also see message signs, arrow boards, and cones set up in the area.

The project widens the acceleration and deceleration lanes on Route 50 at Racetrack Road. These are the lanes that help drivers speed up to merge onto the highway or slow down to turn off of it.

On Racetrack Road, lane closures will happen between Route 50 and MD 707 (Grays Corner Road). Drivers heading through that stretch should be ready for a flagger or a lane shift.

Drivers on Route 50 will see changes too. Single lane closures are planned for the westbound right lane and the deceleration lane of Route 50, from Brader Lane to Racetrack Road in Berlin.

SHA says it understands that detours and roadwork can be an inconvenience for some drivers. The agency says the work is needed to keep the area's roads safe and reliable.

Drivers who need help while on the road can dial #77 from a mobile phone for roadside assistance. The closures start Monday and should wrap up in about three weeks if the weather cooperates.
