Salisbury Fire Launches Life-Saving Blood Program
Salisbury, MD - The Salisbury Fire Department is rolling out a new program that could save more lives before patients even reach the hospital. It's called the Prehospital Whole Blood Program, and it lets specially trained paramedics give whole blood to critically injured patients right at the scene.
The program uses low-titer O positive whole blood for patients suffering severe blood loss. This includes trauma injuries, medical emergencies and other life-threatening situations. Starting treatment earlier gives patients a better shot at surviving hemorrhagic shock.
Whole blood is becoming the go-to standard in trauma care across the country. That's because it replaces red blood cells, plasma and platelets all in one product. This helps the body get oxygen moving again and helps blood clot faster during emergencies.
Getting this program off the ground took teamwork. The Salisbury Fire Department worked with its medical director, regional health care partners and the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS). Together, they made sure every requirement was met for clinical care, storage, tracking and quality assurance.
In short, this brings hospital-level blood transfusion capabilities straight to the streets of Salisbury. When someone is badly hurt, every minute matters, and this program helps paramedics act faster.

John Dennis of the Salisbury Fire Department. "By bringing blood transfusion capabilities directly to the patient, our paramedics can begin a life-saving treatment, giving critically ill and injured patients a greater chance of survival. This program reflects our commitment to providing the highest level of prehospital care possible."
