Salisbury Man Arrested After Multi-County Theft Spree

Wicomico County, MD - A month-long investigation into a string of retail thefts has led to an arrest in Wicomico County, Maryland. Detectives with the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division (CID) took a Salisbury man into custody on multiple controlled dangerous substance (CDS) charges on July 17, 2026.

Investigators identified Mark Jones as the main suspect behind numerous retail theft incidents across the region. They believe Jones targeted several businesses in Wicomico County before expanding into Sussex County, Delaware, along with Worcester and Somerset counties once he realized he was under investigation. The total value of stolen property is still being calculated but is estimated between $50,000 and $100,000.

On July 17, 2026, detectives learned Jones was staying at the Economy Inn in Salisbury, Maryland. CID members set up surveillance and watched him leave a motel room carrying items suspected to be stolen. He then got into a Chevrolet Malibu driven by another person.

Detectives followed the vehicle through Salisbury and conducted a traffic stop. A Sheriff's Office K-9 performed a free-air sniff around the car and alerted to the odor of narcotics.

A search of the vehicle turned up a quantity of suspected crack cocaine consistent with distribution. Jones was arrested without incident. The driver was also found with suspected user-quantities of crack cocaine and methamphetamine.

Detectives recovered several items believed to have been stolen from the Walmart in Pocomoke City. Those items are being held while investigators confirm ownership with the retailer.

A follow-up search of the motel room was conducted with the cooperation of everyone staying there. No additional stolen property was found.

Jones now faces multiple CDS charges tied to the July 17th stop. The investigation is still active, and detectives are working with several law enforcement agencies and retail partners.
