Wicomico County, MD - On Saturday, October 3, 2026, at approximately 1:06 a.m., a deputy with the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office was on patrol near the U.S. Route 13 Bypass and Coulbourn Mill Road in Wicomico County. The deputy saw a vehicle parked in the emergency turnaround.

What started as a check on a parked car ended with a Salisbury man facing several charges. Those include DWI, assault, and damaging property inside the Sheriff's Office.

The deputy spoke with the driver, who was identified as Na'Jer Khalil Robert Ayres of Salisbury, Maryland. Deputies said they noticed several signs that he had been drinking.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Ayres had a strong smell of alcohol on him. His eyes were bloodshot and glassy, his speech was slurred, and he had trouble keeping his balance.

Ayres told deputies he had about five to six beers that evening. Deputies also saw an alcohol container inside the vehicle.

Deputies had Ayres take field sobriety tests. He was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Ayres first agreed to take a breath test. Deputies took him to the Maryland State Police Salisbury Barrack for the test.

Once there, the Sheriff's Office said he became more and more uncooperative. He resisted deputies as they tried to finish the testing.

As deputies tried to put him back into a patrol car, the Sheriff's Office said Ayres kicked a deputy in the thigh. Deputies described it as a backward "mule kick."

Ayres kept resisting. Deputies had to physically help him into the patrol car.

He was then taken to the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office. According to the Sheriff's Office, his behavior did not stop there.

While in a holding cell, Ayres is accused of blocking the security camera several times.

Deputies also said he damaged a bench support and removed several bolts that held benches to the floor in two different cells.

Ayres was later taken to the Wicomico County Detention Center. He was turned over to detention staff there.

He faces charges related to driving under the influence, resisting or interfering with law enforcement, assault, and malicious destruction of property. He also faces related charges.
