Salisbury Zoo Breaks Ground on New Coati Habitat
Salisbury, MD - The Salisbury Zoo is inviting the whole community to be part of something special. On Wednesday, June 17, at 10 a.m., the Zoo will hold an official groundbreaking ceremony for its brand-new Expedition Ecuador Habitat, and everyone is welcome to come celebrate.
The new habitat will be home to white-nosed coatis, a curious and social mammal native to Central and South America. If you're not familiar with coatis, think ringed tails, long snouts, and a whole lot of personality. They're members of the raccoon family and are known for being active, playful, and fun to watch.
This is the first entirely new habitat built at the Zoo in over 15 years. The design takes both the animals and visitors into account. There will be two outdoor viewing yards plus interior windows so guests can see the coatis no matter the weather. Construction is expected to wrap up before the end of 2026.
But here's the part of this story that really stands out. A middle-aged female coati named Lulu recently arrived at the Zoo after the USDA and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums reached out about an urgent situation. A facility in northern New York was closing and needed to find her a new home fast. The Salisbury Zoo stepped up.
Lulu is currently being cared for in the Zoo's animal hospital and is in great shape. Once the new habitat is finished, she'll move right in.
"This groundbreaking represents another step forward in our commitment to providing exceptional animal care and engaging experiences for our guests," said Chuck Eicholz, Director of the Salisbury Zoo. "We are excited to share this moment with the community and look forward to providing Lulu with a new home here at the Salisbury Zoo."
The project is being made possible through the newly formed Salisbury Zoo Foundation, Inc. and a generous contribution from the Palmer Foundation. Fundraising is still ongoing, so if you'd like to help give Lulu her permanent home, you can learn more and donate at salisburyzoo.org/support/fundraising/expedition-ecuador.
