On May 27, 2026, troopers took 19-year-old Darrin West of Seaford, Delaware into custody in Maryland. The arrest was made with the assistance of the Salisbury Police Department and the Maryland State Police.

West is currently being held in Maryland while awaiting extradition back to Delaware.

The homicide occurred on the evening of May 21, 2026. Troopers responded to the 24000 block of German Road in Seaford around 8:45 p.m. after reports of a crash. When they arrived, they found the driver, 17-year-old Jacob Rinier Jr. of Laurel, suffering from a gunshot wound. Rinier was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

According to investigators, Rinier had arranged to meet West and a second suspect, 19-year-old Omar Vidro-Pacheco, at the Concord Pond boat ramp to conduct a drug transaction.

During that meeting, West pulled out a handgun and pointed it into the vehicle before shooting Rinier as he drove away. Rinier lost consciousness while traveling on German Road and crashed.

Vidro-Pacheco was taken into custody at the scene the same night and has since been charged with Murder First Degree and related offenses. He was committed to the Delaware Department of Correction on a $1,126,000 cash bond.

Upon his return to Delaware, West will face the following charges:

Murder First Degree (Felony), Attempt to Commit Robbery First Degree (Felony), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony), and Conspiracy First Degree (Felony).
