Somerset County to Restore 24/7 Sheriff Patrols
Somerset County, MD - The Somerset County Sheriff's Office is getting ready to bring back around the clock patrol coverage. The change is set to take effect on August 20, 2026.
Sheriff Ronnie Howard says the move follows a review of staffing levels and how deputies are being used across the county. That review was done alongside the Somerset County Commissioners.
Officials say the goal was to restore 24/7 coverage while still keeping every other part of the Sheriff's Office running smoothly. Through careful planning and some recent staffing wins, the agency says it is now ready to make the switch.
Sheriff Howard shared his thoughts on the update. "Restoring 24-hour patrol coverage is an important milestone for our agency and for the citizens we serve. I appreciate the cooperation and support of the County Commissioners as we worked together to identify an operational solution that strengthens public safety throughout Somerset County. This plan allows us to better align our personnel with the County's public safety needs while continuing to fulfill the Sheriff's Office's essential responsibilities."
A few staffing changes helped make this possible. The County Commissioners approved salary adjustments as part of the FY2027 budget, and that led to more interest from qualified applicants.
One certified deputy has already been hired through a lateral transfer. The Sheriff's Office says up to two more experienced officers could join in the coming months.
Three new Deputy Recruits are also on board and currently attending the Police Academy. Once they finish training and fieldwork, they are expected to join the agency in April 2027.
Two deputies have also returned from extended medical leave. Their return gives the department more experienced hands to support patrol work and other essential duties.
Sheriff Howard says these changes have put the agency in a much stronger position. "Our mission is to provide the highest level of public safety possible with the resources entrusted to us. We remain committed to continually evaluating our operations and deploying our personnel in the manner that best serves the citizens of Somerset County. Restoring 24/7 patrol coverage reflects that commitment and positions our agency to better meet the public safety needs of our community."
The Sheriff's Office says it will keep working closely with the County Commissioners, Somerset County Public Schools, and other public safety partners. The agency says it is looking forward to August 20 and thanks the community for its continued support.
