Sussex County, DE - A 17-year-old girl from Lewes, Delaware is dead after a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Oak Road in Bridgeville, DE.

The Delaware State Police say the crash happened around 9:05 a.m. on June 4, 2026, on Oak Road south of Apple Tree Road.

Investigators say the teen was driving a Toyota Sequoia southbound when she passed another vehicle in a no-passing zone. She was coming up on a curve and appeared to be going too fast. The SUV couldn't make the turn, overturned, and went off the west side of the road.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died.

A 4-year-old child who was riding with her was properly buckled into a child safety seat. That child was also taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Oak Road was shut down for an extended period while troopers worked the scene.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit is still investigating. Anyone who saw what happened or has information about the crash is asked to contact Sergeant A. Mitchell at (302) 703-3269.
