Teen Walking to School Killed in Elkton Hit-and-Run
State of MD - On October 29, 2026, shortly before 7:00 a.m., the Maryland State Police North East Barrack responded to Route 272 at Rogers Road in Elkton, Maryland for a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle. By the time troopers arrived, the vehicle had already driven off and fled the scene.
The person struck was a 13-year-old from North East, Maryland. She was taken from the scene to a local hospital, where she sadly passed away. Police believe she was on her way to school when she was hit.
Early findings show the driver of a 2011 Mini Cooper was heading north on Maryland Route 272, toward the traffic light at Rogers Road. Police believe the teen stepped into the road and was hit by the car.
What troopers learned at the scene pointed them to a Mini Cooper. About 30 minutes after the crash, police found a 2011 Mini Cooper and its driver at a business complex nearby.
The driver, a man, was detained by police. He has not been charged at this time. Any charges will depend on what the investigation finds and on talks with the Cecil County State's Attorney's Office.
Crews from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration came out to help close the road and set up detours. Maryland Route 272, also known as North East Road, was shut down between US 40 (Pulaski Highway) and Lums Road in North East. The road stayed closed for about three hours while troopers worked the scene.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is now handling the case. This team looks closely at serious crashes to work out exactly what happened.
