Threats Target Fruitland Schools, No Danger Found

Wicomico County, MD - On September 21, 2026, at approximately 10:41 p.m., the Fruitland Police Department responded to two bomb threat calls made through its non-emergency dispatch line.

Both calls came from the same phone number, but dispatchers heard two different voices making the threats.

The callers mentioned "Fruitland Elementary School" and made statements about poison gas and hurting people's eyes. Investigators later found there is no school by that name anywhere in Maryland.

Even so, law enforcement did not take any chances. Multiple agencies moved quickly to check the schools in the area.

Wicomico County School Resource Deputies, Fruitland Police Officers, and the Wicomico County Safe Schools Team took part in the search.

They were joined by the Berlin, Maryland State Fire Marshal and the Ocean City Police Department K-9 team.

Together, they searched Fruitland Primary School and Fruitland Intermediate School. Officers looked for any suspicious items, explosives, or hazardous materials.

No evidence of a bomb, chemical agent, or other danger was found at either school. Because of the threats, the schools delayed opening while the searches took place.

Once officers finished and confirmed there was no danger, the schools resumed normal operations. Classes went on as scheduled after the all clear was given.

The investigation into who made the calls is still active. Police are working to trace the calls and identify the people responsible.

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office is working with the Fruitland Police Department and Wicomico County Public Schools on the case. All three say keeping students and staff safe remains the priority.
