Parsonsburg, MD - A trash fire kept firefighters busy Friday night in Parsonsburg, Maryland. The Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to the 7700 block of Jones Hastings Road around 8:37 p.m. on July 3, 2026.

Crews found a 10-foot by 20-foot trash pit fire when they arrived. A neighbor spotted the flames and called it in.

Fifteen firefighters worked the single-alarm fire. They were able to get it under control within 20 minutes.

Fire officials say the blaze started in the trash pit itself. The preliminary cause points to an accidental electrical event involving a lithium-ion battery.

Lithium-ion batteries are common in everyday items like phones, laptops, and power tools.

When damaged or disposed of improperly, they can spark fires that are hard to predict and quick to spread.
