Wicomico County, MD - On April 2, 2026, the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office announced the addition of five Ford Mustang GT patrol vehicles to its fleet in Salisbury, Maryland. These vehicles will be utilized for speed-enforcement operations and the pursuit of individuals violating Maryland traffic laws.

Sheriff Lewis stated that the acquisition of the vehicles was guided by public safety needs and fiscal responsibility. He also noted that traffic safety issues are increasing throughout the county.

"We receive a significant number of requests from residents across Wicomico County asking for increased speed enforcement in their neighborhoods and along major roadways," Sheriff Lewis said. "These vehicles give our deputies the unparalleled capability to respond effectively and safely, while costing significantly less than a police-pursuit Chevy Tahoe. This allows us to strengthen our enforcement efforts while being good stewards of taxpayer dollars."

A specialized training program is currently being developed by the Maryland Police Training Commission and the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office. This high-performance driving course is tailored specifically for the Mustang GT platform. It is the first course of its kind in Maryland.

The curriculum will focus on advanced vehicle handling, pursuit safety, and controlled high-speed operations. Completion of this course is required for all deputies assigned to the new vehicles.

The agency maintains its commitment to reducing dangerous driving behaviors and improving roadway safety within the county.

"These Mustangs are a tool, just one part of a broader strategy to keep our roadways safer," Sheriff Lewis added. "We will continue to combine education, enforcement, and community partnership to address speeding and reckless driving throughout the county."
