Wicomico County to Honor Fallen Veterans May 25, 2026
Wicomico County, MD - Wicomico County will hold its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 25 at 11 a.m. at the Wicomico War Veterans' Memorial in front of the Wicomico Civic Center.
The ceremony is free and open to everyone. If the weather does not cooperate, the event will move inside to the Wicomico Civic Center's Midway Room.
This year's ceremony will include a lowering of the colors by the Wicomico County JROTC, the ringing of the Red Knights Memorial Bell, branch prayers, and a volley of arms by the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office.
Veterans and their families will be recognized throughout the ceremony. A special tribute will also honor Gold Star Mothers, and War Memorial Committee members will read aloud the names of Wicomico County residents who have fallen in the line of service.
The ceremony is organized by the Wicomico County War Memorial Committee. The group formed in 2002 when veterans from all branches of the military came together to honor those who gave their lives in service. Their work led to the creation of the Wicomico War Veterans' Memorial at the Civic Center, which serves as a living war memorial to all veterans.
The memorial features flags from each military branch, along with the United States, Maryland, Wicomico County, and POW-MIA flags. They fly over a brick wall that displays bronze plaques carrying the names of Wicomico County's fallen veterans, beginning with those who served in World War I.
The committee continues to search for information on those listed on the memorial. If you have details about a fallen service member, you can reach Tricia Collins at tcollins@wicomicocounty.org.
Community members also have a way to personally honor someone who has served. For $100, you can purchase a Tree of Honor Gold Leaf engraved with a name and a short message.
The leaf will be displayed in the Wicomico Civic Center lobby on the Veterans' Tree of Honor. All money raised goes toward maintaining the War Memorial for years to come. To purchase a leaf, contact Tricia Collins at 410-548-4900.
