Worcester County Seeks Public Input on Hazard Plan

Snow Hill, MD - Worcester County officials want to hear from residents as they update the county's Hazard Mitigation Plan. The Department of Emergency Services (DES) is asking the community to help identify natural and man-made hazards that could affect the Lower Eastern Shore, along with ideas on how to reduce their impact.

DES will hold four public meetings across the county to gather this input. The first is set for August 5 at 6 p.m. at the Pocomoke Community Center, followed by an August 6 meeting at the Ocean Pines Branch Library, also at 6 p.m.

Two more meetings will follow in September. One will take place September 2 at the Snow Hill Volunteer Fire Company, and the other on September 3 at the Berlin Branch Library. Both are scheduled for 6 p.m.

"Preparing for potential hazards begins by understanding residents' concerns," said Assistant Chief of Emergency Management Katy Vieira. "Residents know their communities best, and their input will help us identify local risks, prioritize mitigation strategies, and develop an updated plan that best reflects Worcester County's needs and establishes the building blocks necessary to ensure a more resilient future."

The updated plan will include a full risk assessment covering natural and man-made hazards, along with critical infrastructure and other community assets. Officials say public feedback will help make sure the plan reflects what the community actually needs while protecting lives, property, and infrastructure. Everything gathered at the meetings will be worked into the final plan.

DES is developing the update alongside CHLOETA, a consulting firm that specializes in emergency management planning. The goal is to give Worcester County long-term strategies for reducing the impact of hazards on people, property, and the environment for years to come.
