Salisbury, MD - Get ready, wrestling fans. The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) is bringing the Maryland State High School Wrestling Championships to the Wicomico Civic Center starting next year.

The two-day event is set for March 5-6, 2027. It will bring nearly 800 Maryland public school student athletes to Salisbury.

"The MPSSAA state wrestling championships have seen rapid participation growth over the last five years across our three divisions," said MPSSAA Executive Director Andy Warner. "We believe the Wicomico Civic Center and the Wicomico County area offer a tremendous opportunity to elevate the wrestling championships and showcase the sport's top high school athletes."

This marks the return of a state championship event to Maryland's Eastern Shore. The last one held in the region was the state field hockey championships at Washington College. It's a big deal for local sports fans who don't often get to see state-level action this close to home.

The wrestling championships cap off Maryland's high school wrestling season each year. More than 200 member schools send their top athletes to compete for the title.

The MPSSAA runs 27 state championship sports in total. Together, those events serve more than 120,000 student-athletes across Maryland every year.

Local leaders are thrilled about the announcement. "We are honored that the MPSSAA has selected Wicomico County to host the State Wrestling Championships," said Justin Polizzi, tourism manager for Wicomico County. "The Eastern Shore has long been a destination for champions, and we are proud to showcase our hospitality and top-notch facilities at this event."

Beyond the excitement on the mat, the event is expected to give the local economy a nice boost too. Organizers estimate it will bring in about $1.5 million annually for the area.

The Wicomico Civic Center will host the championships from 2027 through 2029. There's hope the contract could be extended even further down the road.

For Salisbury and Wicomico County, this is a chance to shine on a statewide stage. Mark your calendars - March 2027 is coming, and it's bringing some serious wrestling talent with it.
